How Local Conditions Shape Solar Installations in the Pacific Northwest

And as Puget Sound Energy customers continue to navigate significant rate increases, solar offers an opportunity for greater sustainability and predictable long-term energy costs.

For those ready to take the leap, one question often comes up early: Is my property actually ready for solar? The answer is often more nuanced than people expect. Roof condition, shading, orientation, electrical infrastructure, and local requirements can all influence the installation process.

According to Trish Merriman, Sales Operations Manager at Western Solar, understanding those realities up front creates better outcomes. “One of the biggest things homeowners should understand is that solar is not about forcing panels onto every roof,” Merriman said. “A reputable solar installer should evaluate the property honestly and design around the realities of the site.”​

While solar discussions mostly focus on panels and energy savings, the viability of an installation hinges on the condition of the roof underneath it.​

That consideration is especially important in the Pacific Northwest, where many homes have older roofs, steep pitches, dormers, multiple roof faces, and decades of sustained exposure to moisture-heavy weather.

“In our region, we often work on older homes with more complex rooflines and roofing materials that have already experienced years of Northwest weather,” Merriman said. “That makes it especially important to evaluate the condition and lifespan of the roof before installing a solar system designed to last 25 years or more.”

Technology Helps Manage Shade Challenges

When homeowners imagine an ideal solar setup, many picture a large roof with wide-open sun exposure. But in the Evergreen State, mature trees are often part of the landscape, making shade one of the biggest variables in a system’s design.

That does not mean properties surrounded by trees automatically rule out solar. Instead, it becomes a matter of understanding how sunlight interacts with the roof throughout the year and how modern system design can adapt to those conditions.

“Tree cover is one of the biggest considerations here, and understandably so,” Merriman said. “We love our trees and support preserving and planting more of them. Our role is not to persuade homeowners to cut trees down. Our role is to educate customers on how shading impacts production so they can make informed decisions alongside an arborist and their own priorities.”

 Advancements in solar technology have also made a significant difference in how shade impacts system performance. Today’s panels produce far more energy than systems installed even a few years ago, allowing homeowners to generate meaningful production even in partially shaded conditions or on more limited roof space.

“Technologies like microinverters have also changed how we approach shade in system design,” Merriman said. “By allowing each individual panel to operate independently, these systems ensure that if one part of an array is occasionally shaded, the rest can continue producing at full capacity.“

Together, these improvements have reshaped what’s possible for solar in shaded environments, often turning a once-major limitation into a manageable design consideration.

Not Every Solar Roof Faces South

Many homeowners still assume solar only works on south-facing roofs. While south-facing roof planes can maximize production, modern solar design allows many east and west-facing roofs to provide strong, long-term performance as well.

“When evaluating a roof for solar, one of the best-case scenarios is a large roof face with minimal obstructions or shading,” Merriman said. “South-facing roofs are ideal, but we also see fantastic results from unobstructed east and west-facing roof planes.

That can be especially valuable in a region known for long summer daylight hours, adding significant production and long-term value for businesses and homeowners.

“East and west arrays can create a broader production curve throughout the day, generating power earlier in the morning and later into the evening,” Merriman said.

Western Solar uses light detection and ranging (LiDAR) modeling tools along with an on-site assessment to evaluate how much sunlight hits the roof across the entire year, helping create a more accurate understanding of long-term production expectations.

Navigating Electrical and Code Requirements

Beyond the roof itself, installers must also evaluate the electrical infrastructure supporting the home. Factors like panel capacity, existing equipment, and local code requirements can all influence how a solar system is designed and installed.

“Electrical panel upgrades are something we evaluate on nearly every project, but they are relatively uncommon overall,” Merriman said. “Most homes and businesses are already capable of supporting solar without major electrical work.”

Merriman added that Western Solar does still encounter older equipment in historic homes, which are common throughout Northwest Washington. Each property comes with different considerations and should be modernized for safety and reliability.

In addition, permitting requirements can vary depending on location.

“Some jurisdictions have stricter firefighter access and roof setback requirements that impact how close solar can be installed to ridges, valleys, and roof edges,” Merriman said. “At the same time, many jurisdictions are evolving to make solar more accessible. The City of Bellingham, for example, has worked to streamline the permitting process for residential solar.”

Merriman believes the best place to start is simply by asking questions and learning what is realistically possible for a specific property.

“My biggest advice is simple: Call a few well-established local solar companies, ask questions, and explore your project together,” Merriman said. “A trustworthy company should not try to pressure you into buying something you don’t need.”

She added that many homeowners begin viewing solar differently once they better understand the long-term financial picture.

“Instead of paying the utility company every month and remaining exposed to future electricity rate increases, many homeowners are simply redirecting that same spending toward owning their own energy production long term,” Merriman said.
